Located in the heart of Barrhaven and with recreational amenities, transit services, schools and shopping nearby, this project introduces 98 affordable dwellings (50 apartments and 48 townhouses) to the popular suburban community. While Barrhaven is usually seen as a car-centric community, a strong central pedestrian axis was identified early in the process.
Our master plan for The Haven Affordable Housing strings townhomes and low-rise apartment blocks along a pedestrian allée with links to transit and shopping via an abutting MUP (multi-use pathway) to the west and schools and recreation space via Longfields to Ken Ross Park to the east.
Features include a gateway court, a central plaza and a toddler play area, community gardens, indoor program spaces for events and programs, laundry facilities, a communal picnic terrace complete with outdoor wood-fired bake oven, bike parking shelters and community mail boxes.
Three housing typologies were developed to ensure a broad unit mix while optimizing density. Ecological sustainability is woven through all aspects of the project, which was designed to a LEED® Gold standard. ◼
