Supporting essential care, dignity, and second chances across our community.

Across Ottawa, community organizations are providing essential services that depend on strong, sustained local support.

Now in its sixth year, Hobin Architecture’s annual fundraising initiative, You Give, We Give, is calling on our community to support three essential organizations serving Ottawa: Belong Ottawa, the Ottawa Humane Society, and Youville Centre. In a time of uncertainty, these organizations are experiencing increased demand for their services and need community support more than ever.

To help strengthen their impact, Hobin Architecture has pledged to match first‑time donations up to $45,000 until July 1, 2026. This matching initiative is designed to amplify every contribution, allowing these vital organizations to continue providing care, compassion, and opportunity to people—and animals—across our city.

Belong Ottawa provides safe, inclusive spaces and community‑based services for people facing homelessness, precarious housing, and social marginalization, offering meals, basic supports, and programming that foster dignity, wellness, and connection.

The Ottawa Humane Society leads Ottawa in building a humane and compassionate community for all animals by providing shelter and medical care to animals in need, promoting responsible pet ownership, and advocating for improved animal welfare through education and community programs.

Youville Centre supports young mothers and their children by delivering integrated education, mental‑health, child‑care, and parenting programs that help families build stability, achieve educational goals, and create brighter futures together.

By lending your support, you can help sustain the vital work of these charities and make a lasting impact on our community

Since 2021, Hobin Architecture’s “You Give, We Give” campaign has matched $170,000 in donations to local charities.

Combined with our matched donations, the You Give, We Give program has generated over half a million dollars in donations while raising awareness of these important local charities.

Please give generously and we will do the same.

This spring, Hobin Architecture pledges to match new donations to three vital organizations in our community.

Here’s how it works. Visit the links below to make your first-time donation before July 1. Hobin Architecture will then make an equivalent donation to each charity, up to $45,000 in total.

This program is intended to stimulate new support for these organizations in need. Therefore, we are limiting the matching program to new donors. If you have donated before, please continue to do so—your financial support means the world to these organizations.

Awarded in cash, the prize recognizes outstanding fourth‑year housing studio work, celebrating projects that demonstrate design clarity, strong architectural ideas, and a sophisticated understanding of contemporary city-building in Ottawa.

This year’s Housing Studio featured 19 student projects, each presented through a concise three‑minute format and displayed throughout the PIT and Lightroom Gallery.
City-Building Criteria & What We Looked For

Before announcing this year’s awards, Hobin Architecture shared the values that anchor our understanding of architecture as a city‑building discipline. Ottawa is a place where design operates at the intersection of history, landscape, policy, and growth. Architecture here must respond not only to buildings but to the shape of neighbourhoods, mobility patterns, and the public realm.

In reviewing the students’ work, we looked for several key qualities:

Density as a City-Building Tool – Not density for its own sake, but density that supports transit, local services, and complete communities—density that respects human scale and Ottawa’s established fabric while enabling the city to evolve.

Affordability through Intelligent Design – We looked for projects that treat affordability as a design problem, not a reduction of ambition—where efficiency, repeatable systems, and thoughtful construction strategies support responsible, high‑quality housing.

Contributions to the Public Realm – Active ground floors, animated edges, and social infrastructure—indoor and outdoor gathering spaces that strengthen the life of streets and communities.

Architectural Craft and Clarity – Clear and disciplined plans, contextual massing, resilient material strategies, integrated sustainability, and an understanding that architecture must endure climate, time, and use.

Thoughtful Engagement with Mobility – Projects that emphasize transit, walking, and cycling while accommodating vehicles responsibly within a city increasingly shaped by LRT and shifting mobility patterns.

A Strong, Organizing Architectural Idea – An idea capable of bringing coherence to complexity—connecting density, social responsibility, sustainability, and urban presence through a clear and purposeful architectural vision.

100 Constellation Drive — A significant transit-oriented redevelopment zone shaped by future LRT/BRT infrastructure and the potential for 500 to 1,000 new homes.

1700 Heatherington Road — An OCH-led affordable housing expansion, integrating family-oriented typologies and supportive services around the Taggart Parkes Family Clubhouse.

250 Montreal Road — A mixed-use civic hub combining a major new Vanier Community Services Centre with housing, retail, recreation, and childcare.

320 Lajoie Street — A long-term redevelopment opportunity involving school properties, community facilities, adaptive reuse, open space, and missing-middle affordable housing.

About the Hobin Prize

The Hobin Prize in Architecture & City Building, established in 2019 by Ottawa‑based Hobin Architecture, recognizes outstanding student work produced in the fourth‑year housing studio at Carleton University’s Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, celebrating excellence in high‑density, urban, and community‑focused design. Each year, a Hobin‑led jury evaluates submissions for conceptual clarity, responsiveness to site and community, technical resolution, graphic communication, and their potential impact on the built environment—reflecting the firm’s long-standing commitment to meaningful city‑building and mentorship within Ottawa’s architectural community. The 2026 jury included Marc Thivierge, Melanie Lamontagne, David Anderson, and Laura Clark.

Plateau Custom Residence

with 2H Interior Design and Casa Verde Construction

Situated in Gatineau’s “Plateau” neighbourhood, this two-storey custom residence was designed for a vibrant family of six. The home blends contemporary architecture with natural serenity, featuring clean rectilinear forms, a refined palette of stone, wood, and glass, and expansive glazing that dissolves boundaries between indoors and out. Thoughtfully zoned interiors support both active living and quiet retreat, while warm, cohesive materials foster comfort and timelessness. Outdoor spaces extend the home’s livability, with a pool, pergola, and landscaped patio creating a seamless connection between architecture and nature. Voting for the People’s Choice Award takes place online here and in person at the Ottawa Fall Home Show until midnight on October 5, 2025.

These organizations provide vital services—from safe shelter and support for women and children, to creative housing solutions for senior artists, to transformative programs for youth. Your donations help sustain their missions and extend their reach.

Thank you to everyone who gave. Your generosity, matched by ours, proves that when we work together, we can build a stronger, more compassionate community.

Together, we can make a difference.

In its fifth year, Hobin Architecture’s fundraising initiative, “You Give, We Give” is calling on our community members for vital support of three essential services to 1,500 women, children, and seniors in Ottawa. Interval House of Ottawa, Christie Lake Kids, and PAL Ottawa are facing increasing demand for their services and need your help to make a difference.

In a generous move to bolster community support, Hobin Architecture has pledged to match first-time donations to these organizations up to $30,000 until July 1, 2025. This matching initiative aims to amplify the impact of every donation, ensuring that these charities can continue to provide life-changing programs and resources.

Interval House of Ottawa offers critical support to women and children escaping domestic violence. Christie Lake Kids empowers children from low-income families through recreational and skill-building programs. PAL Ottawa focuses on enriching the lives of senior artists by providing affordable housing, social engagement, and support services.

By lending your support, you can help sustain the vital work of these charities and make a lasting impact on the lives of those in need in the Ottawa community.

Combined with our matched donations, the You Give, We Give program has generated close to $600,000 while raising awareness of these important local charities.

Please give generously and we will do the same.

This spring, Hobin Architecture pledges to match new donations to three vital organizations in our community.

Here’s how it works. Visit the links below to make your first-time donation before July 1. Hobin Architecture will then make an equivalent donation to each charity, up to $30,000 in total.

This program is intended to stimulate new support for these organizations in need. Therefore, we are limiting the matching program to new donors. If you have donated before, please continue to do so—your financial support means the world to these organizations.

On November 2nd, 2024, our Hobin Architecture team joined industry professionals at the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association’s Housing Design Awards in downtown Ottawa.

We were filled with gratitude and pride to see our projects recognized, with 11 finalist entries and 5 trophies brought home. Each recognition by GOHBA reflects the dedication of our team members and valued community partners, as well as our commitment to innovative design, sustainable building practices, and creating spaces that enhance our communities.

“We are fortunate to have been given the opportunity to create these wonderful living spaces. The team effort behind each and every one of them is monumental, and it feels good to have that recognized in such a prestigious way.

Rolling Hills Retreat is a 3,800 sq. ft. bungalow that blends rustic charm with modern elegance. Inspired by traditional barns and farmhouses, the home’s exterior features a durable metal roof, natural stone, and wood, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. Expansive glass connecting links provide a sense of openness, offering stunning views of the surrounding hills and seamlessly integrating the natural beauty of the landscape.

The property includes a luxurious swimming pool and spa, designed for relaxation and tranquility. Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light, while black-framed windows, exposed wood trusses, and stone fireplaces enhance the rustic, modern feel. The sleek kitchen and a fully enclosed outdoor room with a wood-burning fireplace offer comfort and style year-round. The versatile study/music room, with a sliding glass partition, provides acoustic privacy while maintaining the home’s airy, connected layout—making it a perfect retreat in nature.

Project Team: Barry J. Hobin, Kent Bugatsch, Hugo Latreille

“Rolling Hills Retreat is a house inspired by the landscape, configured to allow distant views of the rolling hills. The design of the house is quite minimalist and elegant, in order to blend in with the vernacular architecture of the area. Local materials such as reclaimed lumber siding and standing seam metal roofing were used to be reminiscent of farm buildings found nearby.
I think the judges appreciated that the minimalistic design was hard to achieve, with the complex but well-executed details found in this home. This, paired with the warm and inviting interior and spectacular landscape, made for a house that was sure to be recognized.”

Situated between Echo Drive and Riverdale Avenue in Old Ottawa South, this modern custom home overlooks the Rideau Canal, showcasing breathtaking views through oversized windows and outdoor terraces across three levels. Inside and out, the design achieves a refined balance of neutral tones and warm, natural materials, with the owners moving in earlier this year.

This project embodies contemporary architecture and an innovative design tailored to its unique “through” lot. With frontages on both the vibrant Riverdale Avenue and the serene Echo Drive, the home offers stunning perspectives of the Rideau Canal.

Project Team: Barry J. Hobin, Todd Duckworth, Wayne Fralic, Jennifer Adams

“Beyond the programmatic checklist for any house, our team strives to celebrate the experience of place through our designs. At the Echo house, while all the principal rooms and spaces are accounted for on the lower floors, this indoor/outdoor rooftop living area creates a unique engagement between the home and its special context on the Rideau Canal.”

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate these achievements, we’re excited to continue innovating and creating spaces that honour both our communities and the environment around us.

Here’s to continuing meaningful projects in the year to come, as we build on a foundation of gratitude, collaboration, and sustainable design.

The Ontario Association of Architects’ Lifetime Design Achievement Award recognizes an Architect’s career-long commitment to the promotion and achievement in Architectural Design Excellence. Presented biennially, this prestigious award celebrates the outstanding contribution of Architects whose body of work reflects a lasting legacy of excellence and innovation.

In an OAA news release this April, Barry J. Hobin was named the recipient of this honor for 2024, sharing the title with past recipients such as A. J. Diamond, George Baird, Bruce Kuwabara, Raymond Moriyama and Eb Zeidler (shown below, left to right).

Barry is described by longtime friend and classmate Dave O’Malley, as “an Ottawa Architect who spent half a century committed to building a successful practice based on design excellence, workplace equity, creative collaboration, social responsibility and, above all, a sense of belonging to and contributing to a wider community.”

Friend and peer Eliseo Temprano commented in his letter of support for the nomination, “Barry is known for being a great team player and someone who can bring people together. Barry’s dedication to teamwork is the foundation of the enterprise he built, drawing on the ideals and methods he started back in the ’80s.”

Wendy Brawley, principal at Hobin, offered in her letter of support, “[Barry] has been humbled by his success and has always been committed to sharing it, giving back through his commitment to philanthropy – both personally and through his ability to bring forth key people from within the community whom together can make a difference.”

The essay prepared for Barry’s nomination submission follows.

Barry J. Hobin // Passion for Teamwork + Catalyst for Change

50 Years of Design Excellence

by Steve Clifford and Gord Lorimer

Visionary designer, urban revitalizer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and family man, Barry J. Hobin has demonstrated design excellence throughout his career in Architecture.

2025 will mark 50 years since Barry Hobin graduated from Carleton University’s Architecture program in 1974. Over nearly five decades, he has left his Architectural mark on the Nation’s Capital, the province of Ontario as well as the Country. Barry is best known for design initiatives that become catalysts for community growth. His buildings, while beautiful, have an immediate impact on the development of community.

Barry has transformed Ottawa’s architectural landscape for the better. The tools he has used to fuel his success remain unchanged to this day: Design, Collaboration, and Community.

Design and City Building

Barry’s design achievements speak for themselves. His projects have been recognized by local and international awards programs. They are commonly referenced within the City of Ottawa’s design guidelines as examples of design excellence. Critics, neighbours and—most importantly—building users laud the designs that Barry and his team create in their Ottawa-based studio.

“If you look at all our projects you will see a modulation of form to avoid oversized blocks, the use of windows in an aggressive fashion for light and views both in and out, and an attempt to create unusual, invigorating interior spaces.” —BJH

“His work, embodying an eclectic but often skillful blend of historical and modern forms, the use of rich and varied materials, and a strong respect for context, often seems connected to the past yet comfortably situated in the present. It is this ability, to create housing and institutional building designs that are at once recognizable to the average person yet still fresh, that underlies his success.” —Rhys Phillips, Architecture Critic

Advocacy is central to Barry’s philosophy. He has been an active supporter of his alma mater, Carleton University’s School of Architecture, being instrumental in the reinstatement of the monthly Forum Lecture Series. The lectures, which are typically open to the public, are described by Barry as a “catalyst for better design in the Ottawa area.”

“We’re very committed to what we’re doing, making every building different and unique, and enhancing understanding of what an Architect can do. We are in the design business, creating buildings that will make Ottawa a better place.” —BJH

Housing Diversity — While Barry’s work has encompassed a broad range of sectors, from spiritual to industrial and almost everything in between, he has developed a unique specialization in housing. By entrenching himself in the housing marketplace since his first day on the job, he has built a knowledge and skill base unmatched in Ottawa.

This housing skill has been applied to the full range of housing typologies, including modest and large custom homes, developer tract housing, high-rise multi-unit apartment buildings, and urban mixed-use developments. Barry is an advocate for homeless shelters, Habitat for Humanity and affordable housing providers like Ottawa Community Housing and Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corp. Barry’s firm has become known for its expertise in supportive housing projects such as long-term care, respite homes and residential outreach programs.

Barry has an understanding of what the market wants and what the community needs, as well as how developers think. He has learned how and when to challenge the municipal regulatory framework. Being ahead of the curve, many of Barry’s projects have inspired the creation of new by-law provisions on mixed-use urban high-rise development within the City of Ottawa.

“Barry has excellent design flair. He understands how to build and design economically, and has excellent business judgment. For someone in the private sector having a firm with all three of those qualities is very endearing.” —Robert Greenberg, Minto Developments Inc.

Custom Homes — Barry has held dear to his heart a special connection to home design, an area that gave him his start in the industry following his Architecture training. Over the years, Barry has accepted notable custom home commissions for clients the likes of Harry Mews, Harley Finkelstein, Dr. Caroline Tosoni, Michael Potter, Yves Tremblay, Sandra Blaikie, Ron Zambonini, Tony Graham and the Canadian Ambassador to Iran.

In each case, whether an urban or rural setting, Barry’s designs consider the forces of context and heritage to develop the form, articulation and layout in conjunction with the owner’s lifestyle and future needs.

A Culture of Collaboration

“Architecture is an interactive and collaborative form of art. We never win business on price, but because we engage with the client and help them think about what it is that they want to achieve. We become part of their team and add value by helping them to define their vision before a shovel ever hits the ground.” —BJH

By embedding this attitude into all his projects, Barry has earned a reputation as a team player and consensus builder. He’s not afraid to provoke critical input into his ideas and those of his team from all players around the table.

Barry has been known to draw comparisons between practicing Architecture and playing organized sports.

“What do these two things have in common? Teamwork. Teamwork is so essential in recognizing that within your team someone has talents you don’t have.” —BJH

It is Barry’s dedication to teamwork that has allowed him to build an enterprise around the ideals and methodologies that he pioneered in the 80’s along with his small initial design team. Barry believes in nurturing a team atmosphere by creating a healthy work environment and promoting activities that allow his team to think and play together outside the walls of their Little Italy office. Sports teams, fundraising events, cottage retreats and international field trips are all ways they engage with one another and with the community.

“We really focus on individual achievement in our society. Today, I stand here as a person in context. I’m a son, a husband, a father, a teammate, a friend… each relationship has shaped who I am.” —BJH

Some of the most significant works produced by Barry’s firm have involved an expanded talent base of Architects. Examples are the Landsdowne Park Redevelopment with bbb Architects, James Bartleman Archives & Library Materials Centre with Shoalts & Zaback, and David Azrieli Pavilion & Lecture Theatre with Moriyama & Teshima. Each of these relationships made for a better project by providing a wider base of experience and increased production resources.

“Barry is a selfless promoter of others who never fails to recognize the contributions and skills of his staff and other members of the development team.” —Wayne Jennings, Doran Contractors

Community at the Centre of Everything

While Barry’s collaborative approach is applied to projects in all sectors his firm undertakes, the approach does favour projects that serve the community. In many ways, Barry treats all his projects as community projects. He possesses a natural ability to discover ways that a building or planned community can embed social, cultural and economic benefits that reach beyond its property lines.

“Internally, the firm believes very strongly in philanthropy in the sense that we are born in community, we are nurtured in community, we owe our success to the context of the community. Community is really important.” —BJH

Philanthropy Barry’s philanthropic endeavours take on many forms. In its early days, his firm adopted a tithing approach to giving back, allocating a portion of revenues to charitable donation before taking any profit. This has evolved to include an annual program called “You Give, We Give”—which was designed to inspire the firm’s peers, clients and followers to donate as well, expanding and compounding the benefit to the community organically through media and online platforms.

With deep gratitude and emotion, Barry accepted a Philanthropy Award from the Ottawa Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals on behalf of his firm in 2023.

“Our challenge moving forward is mentoring that next generation about participating and thinking about what you would do to make Ottawa a better place.” —BJH

Pedagogy In the spirit of giving back, and with a deep seated belief in the power held by the younger generations to make positive changes in our community, Barry is a loyal volunteer and a generous donor of his alma mater, Carleton University. He has personally supported students and served on both the Advisory Board of the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism and the Board of Governors.

In 2019, Hobin Architecture introduced the “Hobin Prize in Architecture and City Building,” encouraging fourth-year students at Carleton University’s Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism through monetary reward. The fourth-year housing studio focuses on topical issues such as affordability, diversity of housing typologies and community engagement.

“These are the themes of our times. Architecture has a more complex role than it ever has in the past. It’s not just about buildings. It’s about building places and trying to respond to things like the LRT and how we plan to live around it.” —BJH

Social Works Barry’s portfolio is notable for its long list of projects for non-profit clients. Organization such as The Salvation Army, The Ottawa Mission, BGC Ottawa, The Ottawa Rotary Home, Multifaith Housing Initiative, National Capital Y and Ottawa Jewish Community know Barry’s firm well, and trust his ability to respect their values and funding capacity.

Update August 2024:

We Couldn’t Have Done It Without You!

We’re proud to say our 2024 campaign was another huge success. Thanks to everyone who supported the cause by donating to these three important organizations. Through our combined efforts, a total of $80,000 was raised between April and July of this year.

As we begin to think about next year’s plans, we’d like to remind you that it’s never too late to help! Even though our matching campaign is over for 2024, please continue to give generously using the links below.

“Our goal this year is to fully furnish 1500 homes and provide a bed, food, and settlement support for 250 refugee claimants in their first months in Canada. Thank you for helping us make this important work possible!”

—Allan Reesor-McDowell, Matthew House Ottawa

“These gifts help women build meaningful lives and homes after living in ongoing homelessness.”

—Richard Jacobs, Cornerstone Housing for Women

“We were able to announce the matching program at an event held by a former staff member in support of our work, which really helped drive up new donor donations and fund the furnishing of our new homes for 20 additional residents in need of affordable, safe housing.

Together, we can make a difference.

Hobin Architecture believes everyone deserves a safe place to live. This year, we are focusing on three organizations in our own community which provide critical housing and services to people in need. These charities need your generosity now more than ever. The important work they do is vital to our community and for many is a lifeline to a brighter future.

Rising food and energy prices are growing hurdles for charity groups who already operate on tight margins. And for these organizations, economic uncertainty has made planning a bleak and disheartening exercise.

But together, we can make a difference if we act fast.

Now in its fourth year, Hobin Architecture’s “You Give, We Give” campaign has matched $100,000 in donations to eight local charities:

Multifaith Housing Initiative

BGC Ottawa

The Ottawa Mission

Cornerstone Housing

SPAO

Ten Oaks Project

Centre 507

The Odawa Native Friendship Centre

Combined with our matched donations, the You Give, We Give program has generated over $500,000 while raising awareness of these important local charities.

Please give generously and we will do the same.

This spring, Hobin Architecture pledges to match new donations to three vital organizations in our community.

Here’s how it works. Visit the links below to make your first-time donation before July 1. Hobin Architecture will then make an equivalent donation to each charity, up to $40,000 in total.

This program is intended to stimulate new support for these organizations in need. Therefore, we are limiting the matching program to new donors. If you have donated before, please continue to do so—your financial support means the world to these organizations.

On November 30, 2023, members of Hobin Architecture and our consultant team proudly accepted an Award of Excellence in the Urban Infill category, recognizing the many urban design achievements of Rochester Heights Redevelopment Phase 1. Held biennially, the City of Ottawa’s Urban Design Awards honour exceptional projects in Ottawa completed in the past two years. The Urban Infill category considers buildings of high architectural standard, and which reflect a “thorough and sensitive understanding of the context, site plan, massing, and pedestrian amenities.”

In its first phase, the redevelopment of Rochester Heights redefines this urban site by carefully addressing the scale and building articulation at each of its street fronts while placing emphasis on creating vibrant and inviting exterior gathering spaces. As the first residential Passive House project of this scale in Canada, the building’s innovative design adheres to strict Phius standards resulting in a defining aesthetic. The project serves as a catalyst for a thriving, sustainable and socially inclusive development within a safe and durable environment while instilling pride and a sense of place for its inhabitants.

The project was completed in 2022, and our team is now preparing the construction documents for the second phase of redevelopment.

2023 was a year of Community. We built on our own community by advancing members of our team and welcoming a talented international architect. We raised over $100,000 for the Mission and other important community organizations. We were humbled by receiving an AFP Philanthropy Award. Our projects for The Salvation Army, Ottawa Community Housing, Woodvale Pentecostal Church, multiple school boards and the long-term care sector made strides toward their realization. Finally, we kicked off the holiday season by donating much needed clothes and supplies to those less fortunate.

Hobin Architecture has always held high the importance of transferring knowledge to the next generation of leaders within the firm. As our growing team reached nearly 50 people this year, it was critical that we adopt a structure to ensure this flow of information throughout the entire team, while providing a more refined management and administrative framework. The new structure ensures that each member of our team has the appropriate level of mentorship involvement based on their degree of experience and areas of specialization.

In November, we were humbled to be named Outstanding Small Business Philanthropist by AFP Ottawa. AFP describes the recipient: “This company exhibits outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and its generosity encourages others to take philanthropy leadership roles.” Founding Principal, Barry Hobin accepted the award on behalf of the team, reflecting on his personal journey to philanthropism and asserting the importance of mentoring the next generation. Click here to watch Barry’s acceptance speech. Photo credit: Caroline Phillips.

You Give, We Give

This year’s annual fundraising initiative focused on the Ottawa Mission’s “Summer of Hope” campaign. We made a pledge to triple-match donations made over a two-day period, up to $20,000, at the slowest time of year for charitable giving—the middle of summer. Our commitment inspired the generosity of hundreds of other donors, totaling $87,380.

Our firm believes strongly in giving back, and we hope that others in our industry and beyond will be inspired to find ways to leverage their own communities to support important causes. You Give, We Give is Hobin Architecture’s way of mobilizing a force greater than we are on our own to support charities in need.
